Common ways to finance a truck

Truck loans are commonly set up in one of these three ways. The main difference is who owns the truck during the term.

  • Chattel mortgage

You own the truck from the day finance settles, while the lender holds a mortgage over it as security until the loan is repaid.

  • Finance lease

The lender keeps legal title for the term while you use the truck and make regular lease payments. At the end you can offer to buy it, refinance the residual or hand it back.

  • Hire purchase

The lender owns the truck for the life of the agreement and you make fixed repayments. Ownership transfers to you once the final payment clears.

The tax and GST treatment differs between them. Confirm your own tax position with your accountant.

Truck finance basics

What does "fund my truck" mean?

Fund my truck means FundMy arranges the finance for your truck through a lender, so you do not have to pay the full price upfront. FundMy is a finance broker, not a lender, and is part of Equifund Financial Group, Australian Credit Licence 389328. A FundMy broker matches your application across a panel of specialist commercial lenders. Your broker then seeks a conditional pre-approval, subject to lender assessment.

What is the difference between a truck loan and truck finance?

A truck loan and truck finance usually mean the same thing: a lender pays for the truck and you repay it over an agreed term. Truck loans for ABN holders are often set up as a chattel mortgage, where you own the truck and the lender holds security over it. Finance leases and hire purchase are other types of truck finance.

Who can get truck finance through FundMy?

FundMy arranges truck finance Australia-wide for ABN holders, including sole traders, tradies, owner-drivers, partnerships and companies. FundMy arranges finance for business-use trucks only, not consumer purchases. All finance is subject to lender assessment and lending criteria.

What types of truck can I finance?

You can finance prime movers, rigids, tippers, refrigerated trucks, curtainsiders, tow trucks, crane trucks, tilt trays and trailers, new or used, from a dealer, a private sale or an auction, subject to lender criteria.

Can a sole trader get truck finance?

A sole trader can get truck finance under their own ABN, subject to lender criteria. Some specialist lenders can assess your ABN, BAS and contract income, which is how sole traders and owner-drivers can be funded when a major bank's credit template does not fit.

What documents do I need for truck finance?

To apply for truck finance you need an active ABN, recent BAS or bank statements, the truck details, and any freight or head-contract agreement. Your broker confirms exactly what your lender needs when they call.

Do I need to own property to get truck finance?

Truck finance does not always need property security, because the loan is usually secured against the truck itself. Lenders on the panel look at the truck alongside your ABN, BAS and contract income, subject to lender assessment of the business, the truck and your credit profile.

Will checking my options affect my credit file?

Checking your options with FundMy starts with an initial eligibility check, which does not affect your credit file. A formal credit enquiry is only made once you go ahead with a full application.

Trucks, sellers and costs

Can I finance a used or ex-fleet truck?

Used, ex-fleet, dealer demo and private sale trucks can be financed, subject to lender criteria. Major banks often apply age cut-offs, while some specialist lenders also look at condition, kilometres and service history. Tell us the make, model and year and your broker will say what is realistic.

Can I finance a truck from a private seller or an auction?

A truck bought from a private seller or at auction can be financed, as can a dealer purchase or an end-of-lease buyout. The truck needs to meet the lender's age and condition requirements. Your broker tells you what the lender needs before you commit to the purchase.

Do I need a deposit for truck finance?

A deposit is not always required for truck finance. Whether one is needed depends on the truck, the lender and your business profile, and newer ABNs may need to put in a contribution. Your broker tells you what each lender is likely to ask for before you apply.

Can I finance a trailer or a body with the truck?

A trailer, a body or a fit-out can often be financed together with the truck or separately, subject to lender criteria. Tell your broker what is being added and who is supplying it so the lender sees the whole purchase.

What interest rate will I pay on truck finance?

The interest rate on truck finance depends on the lender, the truck, its age, the loan term and your business profile, so there is no single rate. Your broker will show you the rate and the fees and charges for each option before you choose. Rates are set by the lender and are subject to lender criteria.

How long are truck finance terms?

Truck finance terms commonly run from one to seven years, depending on the truck and the lender.

General information only. It does not take into account your objectives, financial situation or needs. All finance is subject to lender assessment and lending criteria.
